The good news is that the current empirical trend for 2012 in well below the mean for this time of year (red line on the chart). This is checked once a month. So we can rely on this data.
Also, one can notice that the salinity in the Middle River, just around the peninsula, is higher than our Back River for the same time of year. This would be due to the greater amount of storm water runoff into the Back River as the Back River watershed encompasses 73 miles of fresh water streams feeding in from eastern Baltimore County.
To compare these levels to the ideal level of salinity in the ocean, say in the Florida Keys, would be around 32 ppt.
