Introduction
The history of aviation in Maryland dates back to the Wright Brothers' first Army aviation school that taught the first two Army officers to fly at College Park. In 1920 Logan Field became the first commercial aviation facility in Baltimore, and in 1941 Harbor Field was opened, and Sikorsky flying boats began regularly scheduled flights.
In 1929, the Glenn L. Martin Company built a factory in Essex/Middle River. For most of the thirties the plant was regarded as the most modern in the U.S. The Martin B-26 Marauder was one of the most outstanding bombers of World War II. A total of 5,266 of these bombers were built.
Baltimore County has a rich aviation history, but over time much of that history has been lost. Essex Aviation Association is dedicated to the aviation education of the non-flying and flying public and aviation history in Baltimore County. The association's primary missions are the profitable operation of Essex Skypark and raising donations to reinvest in the airport for community outreach, recreation and education.
This proposal is made on behalf of the citizens of the Essex/Middle River community, local businesses, and the pilots and business owners of Essex Skypark. We enjoy the support of County Councilman Joe Bartenfelder, Senator Norman Stone, Senator James Brochin, the Maryland Aviation Administration, the 400,000 members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and the 689 members of the Maryland Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.
It is our intent to demonstrate the viability and need of Essex Skypark to Baltimore County, the State of Maryland and our local community. We will be responsible airport tenants: maintaining the open space, taking care of the environment, and educating the public.
